About The Hiking Tribe

Real Trail Advice. Tested Gear. No Sponsored Fluff.

Who We Are

The Hiking Tribe started because finding honest hiking advice online is frustrating.

Too many “gear reviews” are just rewritten product descriptions. Too many trail guides are written by people who’ve never set foot on the path. And too many blogs push whatever brand pays them the most.

We built The Hiking Tribe to be different.

Today, we’re a team of hikers, backpackers, and one very detail-obsessed editor (that’s me) focused on one thing: giving you trail advice and gear recommendations you can actually trust.

Meet the Team

Alfredo Ramses — Founder & Lead Editor

I’ve spent over a decade researching hiking gear and trail techniques. I won’t claim to have summited every peak—but I might be the best at figuring out which boots, backpacks, and gear are worth your money and which are just good marketing.

I lead the editorial process, oversee every review, and personally write or edit most of what you read here. If a trail guide or product makes it onto The Hiking Tribe, it’s because I’m confident it deserves to be there.

Our Network of Trail Testers

We work with a small network of experienced hikers and backpackers across different terrains—from desert canyons to alpine peaks. They log the miles. They wear out the boots. They tell us what holds up and what falls apart after 50 miles.

Their field notes, combined with our analysis of thousands of user reviews and gear specs, form the backbone of every recommendation we make.

How We Work

Our Review Process

We don’t just copy the product description and call it a review. Here’s what actually goes into our recommendations:

  1. Deep Research — We analyze specs, compare models, and read hundreds of user reviews across REI, Amazon, hiking forums, and Reddit.
  2. Trail Testing — Our network of testers uses the gear on real trails. Not a warehouse—actual dirt, actual elevation, actual weather.
  3. Honest Evaluation — We score products on what matters: durability, comfort, weight, value, and real-world performance.
  4. The “Anti-Sell” — Every product we recommend comes with its honest flaws. No gear is perfect, and we won’t pretend otherwise.

Editorial Independence

We participate in affiliate programs (including Amazon Associates and REI), which means we may earn a commission if you buy through our links.

But here’s what that doesn’t mean: no brand pays for placement. Our recommendations are based on performance, not sponsorship deals. If a product doesn’t hold up on the trail, we say so—even if it would make us money to stay quiet.
